Opened in February 2008, the museum is the crowning jewel to a renovation project in the AMC, originally the Golden High School from 1952. The only museum of its type in the United States, the museum will introduce visitors to the world of mountain and rock climbing and honor the achievements of mountaineers from America and around the world. Exhibits on climate, science, cultures and the humanities as they relate to mountains promise to make the visitor experience exciting and interactive. The museum contains artifacts, art, climbing gear, and maps that are a historical testimony of mountaineering since the late 19th century. In addition there is a crevasse to cross and a large scale model of Mt. Everest to see. Base Camp has wonderful books, gifts, clothing, and authentic items representing the countries of the 7 summits, as well as providing event and admission tickets. Guided tours are available with reservation.
